Whale Shark | Mafia Island
The Giant of Mafia Island | An Unforgettable Encounter

The Seasonal Legend
The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest fish species in the global ocean, and the waters surrounding Mafia Island serve as one of the most reliable, long-term feeding grounds in the entire Indian Ocean basin. Unlike other regional populations that migrate continuously across vast ocean trenches, a significant aggregation of whale sharks remains resident in the sheltered waters of the island for extended periods, driven by specific localized environmental conditions.
The primary whale shark season spans from October through February, aligning with the seasonal shift of the north-east monsoon winds (Kaskazi). During this specific period, the wind patterns drive nutrient-rich water upwelling along the western coast of the island, creating a massive concentration of plankton and shrimp larvae. This dense plankton bloom pulls the whale sharks close to the surface to feed, often just hundreds of meters from the shoreline. Because they are actively feeding at the surface, surface visibility is optimized, providing an extraordinary, reliable window for snorkelers and marine researchers to observe these massive filter-feeders in their natural habitat without scuba equipment. trips designed for ultimate safety and eco-respect.
