Snorkeling | Mafia Island
Mafia Island Marine Park
Snorkeling Mafia Island | Eco Shamba Kilole Lodge offers an immediate, accessible window into the shallow-water habitats of Chole Bay, the central focus of the protected Mafia Island Marine Park. Because the bay is naturally shielded from the heavy swells of the open Indian Ocean by an intricate network of barrier islands, sandbanks, and mangrove systems, it creates a stable, low-energy environment. This unique geography allows diverse marine life to flourish in shallow water, just centimeters beneath the surface, making it an exceptional destination for snorkelers who prefer a relaxed, effortless pace without the weight and complexity of scuba gear.
The shallow reefs of the bay are sustained by clear, sun-drenched waters that optimize photosynthetic activity for hard and soft corals. Snorkelers drifting over these pristine ecosystems will cross over shallow fringing reefs, isolated coral tholos, and expansive seagrass meadows. Each of these distinct zones serves as a micro-habitat, supporting a massive baseline of biodiversity that remains completely visible from the surface under standard daylight conditions. The fish populations in these sunlit zones are highly concentrated and active
While your home base is embedded within the quiet canopy of our 13-acre shamba, your aquatic logistics are handled through our dedicated partnership with Big Blu (Butiama Marine). Located just one kilometer from our main gates in Utende, Big Blu provides professional marine guides, high-standard safety equipment, and a fleet of traditional dhows and motorized boats designed specifically for navigating the localized tidal shifts of the marine park.
