The bay’s multi-tiered marine habitats range from shallow, sunlit mangrove channels and extensive seagrass meadows to vertical drop-offs and sweeping coral gardens.
Because Chole Bay is sheltered from the open ocean’s harshest swells, it forms an ideal nursery and permanent habitat for over 400 species of fish and 50 genera of hard corals. Divers navigating these waters will encounter pristine coral reefs dominated by massive Porites structures, delicate Acropora tables, and vibrant soft corals. The protected channel walls host schooling barracuda, groupers, and sea turtles, providing an exceptional baseline of marine biodiversity for underwater photography and data collection right inside the Mafia Island Marine Park boundaries.

Diving inside Chole Bay is spectacular from July to March, offering sheltered coral gardens and excellent reef life. If you are targeting the outer wall drop-offs beyond the reef, the optimum window is October to February, when sea conditions are calmest.
