Mafia Island vs Zanzibar: An Honest Guide (2026)
(From Someone Who Lives Here)
Mafia Island vs Zanzibar: Almost every week, a guest asks us some version of the same question: “Why should I come to Mafia Island instead of Zanzibar?”
We live and work on Mafia Island, so you’d expect us to just sell you Mafia. We’re not going to do that. Because the honest truth is this: for some travellers, Zanzibar is the better choice — and we’ll tell you exactly who. For others, Mafia is a place they’ll talk about for the rest of their lives.
Here’s the honest comparison, so you can choose the trip that’s actually right for you.
First, let’s be fair to Zanzibar

Zanzibar is popular for good reasons. If these are what you’re after, book Zanzibar — you’ll have a wonderful time:
Miles of postcard beaches and dozens of them to choose from.
Stone Town — a UNESCO World Heritage old town full of history and culture.
Nightlife, restaurants and shopping — there’s always something happening.
Lots of hotels at every price, from backpacker to ultra-luxury.
Easy access — frequent direct international flights.
If your dream holiday is a lively beach scene with plenty of choice and things to do, Zanzibar is the right island. Genuinely.
So why does anyone choose Mafia Island?

Because Mafia isn’t really a beach destination — it’s a marine wilderness. The entire area sits inside the Mafia Island Marine Park, one of Tanzania’s oldest and most protected marine reserves. That single fact changes everything about the experience.
Here’s what Mafia has that Zanzibar simply cannot offer:
🐋 You can swim with whale sharks
Mafia is one of the most reliable places on Earth to swim alongside whale sharks — the largest fish in the ocean — in season (roughly October to February). These are calm, respectful, small-group encounters in their natural feeding grounds. Zanzibar doesn’t have this. For many guests, it’s the moment of a lifetime.
🐠 The reef is protected, and it shows
Because you’re inside a marine park, the coral gardens are healthier and far less crowded than the heavily-visited sites around Zanzibar. Diving and PADI courses are run by our on-site partner Big Blu (Butiama Marine) — confined-water training even happens in our lodge pool, so you can learn to dive the day you arrive, then explore the park on your doorstep.
🤫 There are almost no crowds
Here’s the part people misunderstand. Mafia has few beaches and few hotels — and that is exactly the point. You won’t be one of ten thousand tourists on a resort strip. You’ll often have a reef, a trail, or a stretch of shore entirely to yourself. Fewer options is what protects the silence.
🦜 Nature is everywhere
Our lodge alone is a 13-acre botanical garden with 43 documented bird species. Sea turtles nest on the island. This is a place for people who travel for nature, not past it.
💚 It’s a place with a conscience
We’re an owner-run eco-lodge, not a resort. We source locally, tread lightly, and my wife Francesca runs Animalia Mafia Island, a dog-and-cat vaccination and sterilization program that cares for the island’s animals. When you stay here, you’re part of that.
“But Mafia has fewer beaches…” — yes, and that’s the point
This is the honest heart of it. If you measure islands by how many beaches and how many hotels, Zanzibar wins and Mafia never will. But if what you actually want is somewhere unspoilt, quiet and real, those same “missing” things are the whole reason to come. Mafia isn’t a smaller Zanzibar. It’s the opposite of it.
Mafia Island vs Zanzibar: which is right for you?

| Many beaches & big resorts | One protected Marine Park on your doorstep |
| Lots of hotel choice | Exclusivity — a handful of small lodges |
| Shopping & easy direct flights | Reliable whale sharks & unspoilt diving |

If your eyes lit up on the left, book Zanzibar with our blessing. If they lit up on the right — welcome to Mafia.
Can you do both?
The Mafia Island vs Zanzibar question isn’t always either/or — and many of our guests do both. Mafia is a perfect post-safari escape: come down from the Serengeti or Ruaha and keep the wildlife immersion going by the sea, instead of switching to a crowded resort. Some travellers combine a few days of Stone Town culture in Zanzibar with the quiet and the whale sharks of Mafia. There’s no wrong answer
How to get to Mafia Island (it’s easier than you think)
Mafia has its own airport, with short scenic flights from Dar es Salaam (about 30 minutes) and connections via Zanzibar. We help arrange the logistics for our guests — it’s far simpler than most people expect.
