Chalet Mvuvi | Mafia Island
Chalet Mvuvi | The Fisherman’s House
Chalet Mvuvi | The Fisherman’s House (Mvuvi—the Swahili word for fisherman) is an intentional architectural nod to the waters of the surrounding Marine Park. The interior spans a precise 35-square-meter footprint, meticulously engineered to serve as a high-standard, streamlined basecamp. The defining aesthetic feature of the chalet is its hand-textured blue oxide walls, applied using regional plaster techniques to capture the light and mimic the deep gradients of the ocean.
The floor is finished in a smooth, hand-polished concrete that naturally remains cool underfoot, providing immediate relief from the tropical climate. The overall architecture focuses on low-impact, organic design, where raw, exposed hardwood pillars and roof joists are left visible to display their natural grains.
The interior geometry is optimized specifically for a diving couple who require both physical comfort and efficient space to manage equipment, optics, and field notes after long days on or below the water.

Garden to Sea Connection
Mvuvi is built to breathe, featuring a wide veranda that looks directly onto the shamba’s greenery. The unique textured walls and high thatched roof are handcrafted to keep the interior naturally cool, providing an authentic, low-impact environment for your stay. It is a practical and comfortable space to decompress after a long day at sea.

Artisanal Heritage
The interior of Mvuvi tells the story of the coast through its unique, handcrafted details. Our custom wardrobe is fashioned from a reclaimed Ngalawa—the traditional outrigger canoe used by local fishermen for centuries. By integrating these seafaring elements into the 35 sqm space, we provide a functional and authentic connection to the maritime culture of Mafia Island.
Designed for the Divers
Mvuvi is more than a place to rest; it is a practical base for your underwater adventures. The spacious, shaded veranda offers ample room for organizing camera rigs and prepping gear before heading to the Marine Park. Located just a short walk from the water, this is the functional heart of your diving holiday, where the morning’s preparation is as seamless as the dive itself.

Flexible Comforts & The Third Bed

The Ritual of the Sea
Transition from the deep blue back to the peace of the shamba. Our handcrafted showers are designed as private, sensory spaces—where 24/7 hot water and hand-applied textures wash away the salt of the Indian Ocean. It is the essential final step in a day of exploration, leaving you refreshed and ready for an evening under the stars.

Sunsets & Shared Stories
As the day winds down, the main house becomes the gathering point for the lodge. It’s a place to meet fellow travelers, enjoy a drink, and trade highlights from the day’s adventures. Whether you’re comparing notes on the reef or simply enjoying the evening breeze, the communal lounge offers a relaxed, welcoming space to connect before dinner is served.
